We were given a DVD as a Christmas gift in Montreal, but we live in England. Our DVD player says it is not in the right format. I can play the DVD on my laptop, but the software says that it is in the wrong format and you can only play the DVD four times. Any ideas?

Yes, there are regions for DVDs for different parts of the world. The DVD players that are sold in that region will play that region. Also, in the UK, video is played on a standard called "PAL" and in the US it is "NTSC". The lines of resolution are different (and different from our ATSC or high definition too.) And, the refresh rates (how many frames per second or how many times the display changes in a second) are different in the US and the UK.
If you frequently want to watch DVDs from other areas of the world, you’ll want aDVD player that has PAL/NTSC and is region free. (Remember to pick one that has 110/220v to play in either country.)
See the source below for one place to buy them online. I searched for "multi region dvd players."
chck this site, might give u some info or help. http://www.dvdunlocker.com/movies/?pu=false
Actually, you can play the DVD on your laptop as many times as you want, but you can change the region of your DVD drive only 5 times. On the fifth change, your drive will be locked to that region for good.
If you know how to copy DVDs, I suggest making a copy. When you do that, you can remove the regional protection.
