Christmas Ornament Storage Basics

Posted on December 31st, 2009 in Christmas | No Comments »

Decorating the Christmas tree is a yearly tradition many families relish.  Often times, we have large collections of ornaments we have acquired over the years, each with a special sentimental value because it reminds us of a particular person, place, or time in our lives.  When the holidays are over, the tree and decorations are packed away, with many of us not putting a lot of thought into the way we store these valuable collections.  Haphazardly tossing fragile decorations into a box is a recipe for disaster, yet this is what a lot of us do.  In this article, we’ll cover the basics of how to properly store a collection of Christmas ornaments so as to prevent damage and protect your investment.

Christmas ornaments will need to be stored differently depending on type.  Plastic or wooden pieces, for example, won’t require as much padding and protection as glass.  One option for less fragile items is to arrange a single layer in a storage box or bin with a large, flat bottom.  Next, place some pieces of used tissue paper or blank newsprint over the top, and start a new layer.  Repeat this process until the box is full.

For delicate glass decorations, or those that might scratch if they rub together, alternative storage methods will be needed.  One method is to wrap each ornament individually in tissue paper before storing away, although this is time consuming.  Some ornament collectors use the original boxes for storage, which usually provides good protection and can help maintain the value of each piece.  However, if the boxes are not needed for value purposes, you can usually save space by getting rid of them and finding an alternate storage container.

For those in need of an inexpensive option for storing glass ornaments, consider stopping by your local grocery store and asking the produce department for some apple cases.  Apple cases are cardboard boxes fitted with honeycomb style dividers, and they are ideal for holding traditional round ornaments.  If you have oddly shaped decorations; however, apple cases may not work so well.

There are commercially available ornament storage containers, some of which can work quite well.  It’s important to look for something that provides plenty of padding.  If you have decorations in a variety of odd shapes and sizes, you’ll also want something that allows for such varied types of ornaments.  Hard containers can work well, provided they have some insulation or padding on the inside.  If you choose a hard container that is lacking such padding, you can always add it yourself by purchasing some inexpensive pieces of foam at a craft store and cutting to the right sizes.  Soft sided storage bags, on the other hand, provide the benefit of padding that’s built in.

If you’ve never taken an inventory of your ornaments in the past, take the time to do so this year before storing them all away.  Document each valuable item that you have, preferably with a receipt and photograph.  If you have a very large collection, make it easy on yourself by arranging the decorations on a tabletop or white sheet and photographing groups of 10 to 20 at a time.  When you’re done, take the documentation to your insurance agent, so they can add the collection to your homeowner’s insurance policy.  In the event of a fire or theft, you’d be very glad to have such coverage in place.

Christmas ornament storage may not be something you’ve thought about in the past, but it’s never too late to implement a new system.  Keeping your decorations clean and safe is also a way of protecting your investment in them.  While it can be initially time consuming, providing good storage solutions for your holiday ornaments is well worth the effort and will pay you back over time with a collection that remains in pristine condition.

Busy Father Christmas

Posted on December 30th, 2009 in Christmas | No Comments »

Are you ready?we will have Christmas at once?now our Father Christmas or Santa Claus Will have busy work?great work. Let’s see what he will do in his biggest night of the year.

There are roughly 2 billion children worldwide. However, assuming Santa doesn’t visit the children of Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, atheist and so on parents, that leaves the 35 per cent or thereabouts whose parents consider themselves Christian. That’s still an impressive 700,000,000 children in a night. Assuming three children per household, that’s 233,000,000 stops for Santa and his sleigh. There may be a few households where all the children have been naughty, but we are going to discount them for statistical purposes. Santa will therefore have to travel a total of 342,510,000km (212,030,000 miles) to finish the job with the sleigh a speed of 10,703,437.5km/hr (6,650,807.72mph).

Assuming each child gets the Transformer Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots, for a present, in his box, Santa will be carting 659g (1.45lb) per child. That’s 461,300 metric tonnes, or about the same in imperial tons, total. For comparison, a Boeing 747-8I airliner can carry 237.5 tonnes in passengers, luggage and fuel.

Optimus Prime is worth £42.99 new. Santa will therefore have to spend a grand total of £30,093,000,000 to provide each child with one, or risk arrest by having his elves make illegal copies. This is the equivalent of the gross domestic product of Costa Rica.

Santa Claus?we are waiting for you.

Christmas Golf

Four old-timers were playing their weekly game of golf when one one of them commented on how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning, roll out of bed – and without an argument, go directly to the golf course to meet his buddies for 18 holes. All three of his friends unanimously agree, ?Let?s do it! We?ll make it a priority, figure out a way and meet here early Christmas morning!?

A few weeks later it?s Christmas morning – and there all are standing next to each other on the first tee box. One friend exclaims ?Boy this game cost me a fortune! I had to buy my wife such a huge diamond ring, she can?t even take her eyes off it.? Another friend says, ?I spent a ton, too. My wife is at home planning the cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures.? The third friend replies ?Well, my wife is at home admiring her new car? reading the manual.? Silence from the fourth guy?

The other three friends in the group look puzzled, while the final guy in the foursome is staring at them like they must have lost their minds. ?I can?t believe you all went to such and expense for a round of golf. I just woke up, slapped her on the butt and said, ?Well babe, Merry Christmas! Golf or sex, what?s it gonna be?? and she said ?Take a sweater.?

Lonely Christmas For Tiger Woods?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 in Christmas | No Comments »

Common people will spend Christmas with family?how about Tiger Woods?

Top golfer Tiger Woods may be spending a Caribbean Christmas in the Bahamas, some reports indicate. Meanwhile, the magazine says Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, who recently reportedly moved out of the couple’s Florida mansion, plans to take their two children back to her homeland of Sweden for the holidays.

People Magazine claims that Woods, who is accused of cheating on his wife with at least 14 other women, and a group of friends, have set sail on board his yacht `Privacy` for the Caribbean.

The magazine quotes a source as saying the group departed on Saturday morning after stocking up on provisions from a local Costco. Another source was quoted as saying Woods plans to cruise in the Bahamas for a few days after hanging around the Palm Beach Gardens area this past week.

Christmas brings us happiness?while it brings Tiger Woods loneliness.

 Interesting Curly-Haired Pigs

a joke?

I’m going to have to give up golf,” Fred sadly advised the club secretary. “I’ve become so nearsighted I keep losing balls and if I play with glasses they keep falling off.”

“Listen, don’t give up;” the secretary replied. “What about teaming up with old Harry Jones.” “But he’s in his 80s and can only just make it around the course.”

“Yes, yes, he’s old, but he’s also farsighted and he’ll be able to see where you’ve hit your ball. It’s a way to stay on playing.”

The next day Fred and old Harry played their first game together. Fred teed off first and his powerful swing took the ball sailing up the R9 Fairway Wood.

“Did you see it?” he asked Harry. “Yes,” the old-timer answered.

“Where did it go?” “I forget!” came the reply.

Reasons I’m Thankful for the End of Christmas: Poker Chip Sets, Sleep, Relative Departures and More

Posted on December 29th, 2009 in Christmas | No Comments »

Christmas is a wonderful, exciting, uplifting holiday when you’re seven and have absolutely no idea how much time and effort goes into Christmas morning. There’s shopping and more shopping, decorating inside and out, cooking several large meals and cleaning the house from top to bottom. That’s of course a pithy outline of all the work that goes along with our favorite holiday. Christmas is over and I’m grateful for so many reasons.

1. With Christmas comes the arrival of relatives you haven’t seen all year long. This may sound great, but if your family is anything like mine then you’re ready to kick them out of your house by lunchtime. I love my relatives, don’t get me wrong, but I just can’t stand how bossy my Aunt gets or how cantankerous my uncle can be. It’s always great to see them arrive, but even better to see them depart.

2. This year I received a lot of presents that are sure to end up buried in the trashcan in just a few short days, however, thankfully I did receive a few presents I wanted for once like gift cards and custom poker chips sets. The end of Christmas means I’ll actually get a chance to use them and I can’t wait.

3. The holiday season usually equates to sleep deprivation. I’ve spent the last month not only working forty hours plus per week, but also running around the mall trying to find the perfect gift for my nephew, attending annoying but obligatory Christmas parties and cooking up a storm. Now that Christmas is over, I can finally get some much needed sleep.

So, let’s have a look at the famous and sexy people who have been lucky to have been born on Christmas.

He was a renowned physicist, astronomer, natural philosopher and alchemist. Among his many discoveries, inventions and theories, he invented the reflecting telescope, studied the speed of sound among other designs. He died 31 March 1727 at the age of 84.

Some of the most beautiful women have their birthday on Christmas. Helena Christensen was born December 25, 1968 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Health-Conscious Christmas Presents

Posted on December 27th, 2009 in Christmas | No Comments »

Christmas is just a couple of days away which means you better stock up on all of those last minute gifts before the mall closes. If you’re a health-conscious person, consider giving your friends and family health and fitness-oriented gifts this Christmas. There are plenty of items out there that they would love to receive. Just make sure that your friends and family understand that you aren’t trying to insult them, you are just trying to give them the gift of health and well-being this Christmas. Look for at my gift tips below.

  1. If you friend or family member enjoys to read, you can easily give them a great healthy gift. Fitness books, healthy cook books or subscriptions to fitness magazines are all excellent choices.
  2. If you’re looking to spend a little more and be a little more proactive with your gift, fitness equipment will be a great splurge. Cheaper fitness equipment ranges from resistance bands, which are great for toning legs and arms, to a yoga mat, which is great for toning and relaxation techniques. More expensive gifts could be a Pilates machine, which is perfect for lengthening and toning the muscles, or a treadmill, which will be perfect for indoor cardio.
  3. If your friend or family member is a fan of tech gadgets, you can easily satisfy their cravings with a heart rate monitor, a cool new stop watch or a digital scale.

You may be tempted to just purchase that contemporary bar stool collection this year, but giving the gift of health will be a much more considerate, thoughtful Christmas present for your loved ones.
